The Royal Borough of Greenwich is home to over 50 multi-use games areas (MUGAs), also known as ball courts. Ball courts are open access community court areas in parks, open spaces and on residential estates. They can be used for ball sports such as football, basketball and netball.
With the help of funding from the Football Foundation, we want to transform a number of these valuable community spaces into free, high quality ‘Playzones’ to help more local people get fit and stay active. We want to make these spaces free to access for as many people as possible.
The Football Foundation’s Playzone funding has some requirements and so to be eligible, our proposals for improvements must include:
Lighting: installation of floodlights to enable all year-round use and improve safety; the floodlights would be positioned to minimise the impact on neighbouring properties and operate on a timer
Regular community sessions: some bookable sessions to allow regular community sessions to be run, giving local people access to coaching and organised sport
Gated ball courts: gated access with a default pin-code for free time, and unique codes for booked sessions.
We would like to know your views on these requirements, as well as which ball courts should be considered for refurbishment, and what other improvements you would like to see.
The Council has identified the below five ball courts as most suitable for refurbishment:
Abbey Wood Park (small ball court / large open concrete area)
Altash Gardens
Briset Park
Hawksmoor
Kidbrooke Green Park
We're also inviting residents to suggest other locations they think could be improved.
We want to hear from people who use the ball courts, and people who don't; we want feedback from as many people as possible.
If you want to provide comments on more than one ball court, please complete the survey more than once.
Please give us your feedback by Friday 12 July 2024.
